Scientific name: Family Aphididae

Description

Aphids are small sucking insect pests that are usually 1-2mm long. There are many different species which are many different colours such as green to pink, bright deep yellow, black and grey. Their bodies are rounded, sometimes with clear elongated wings. They have piercing and sucking mouth parts which draw up the sap resulting in wounds on leaf tissue. They are not limited to feeding on a single plant host species, although this depends on the species of aphid. Their activity is greatly dependent on temperature and are most active between 16˚C and 25˚C. Aphid populations tend to decrease when there is heavy rain and when conditions become very hot and dry or very cold.
